BARNEY INJURY LAW

7 Rollover Injuries

Getting tossed upside down in a rollover accident is a terrifying experience, and it is very easy for occupants to suffer injuries. Our Virginia Beach auto accident lawyer has helped many clients obtain compensation following car wrecks which are not their fault. We look at seven of the more serious rollover injuries a person can suffer when their vehicle flips.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

A person can suffer brain damage when they strike their head on something, such as the dashboard or another passenger. However, TBIs are also common when the head is shaken in a violent manner. The violent motion disrupts the normal functioning of parts of the brain, and many people will suffer from memory impairments, mood swings, and pain.

Getting thrown upside down can easily lead to a TBI. Watch for common symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, and neck stiffness. There is no easy cure for TBIs, unfortunately, so many people will be out of commission for months.

Crush Injuries

A person suffers a crush injury when a heavy weight comes to rest on a person’s limb. In a rollover, the vehicle itself could collapse on you, leading to crush injuries in the arms or legs. These injuries are very dangerous, because the body releases toxins as skeletal muscle breaks down.

Lacerations

A person can suffer cuts to their hands, face, or neck in a rollover accident. Windows often shatter, which send shards flying. The seatbelt might also cut into an occupant’s chest during the rollover. Lacerations often heal on their own but can leave unsightly scars.

Abrasions

If you are thrown from the vehicle, you might suffer “road rash” as you skid along the asphalt. This is a serious injury that often requires skin grafts and antibiotics to treat. Abrasions are at risk of becoming infected, with tragic results if you do not receive the right antibiotics.

Rib Fracture or Bruising

Wearing a seat belt can save your life in a rollover, preventing you from being tossed from the vehicle. However, the seatbelt can also bruise and sometimes fracture a person’s ribs. Rib injuries are very painful because the chest expands as a person breathes. Rib fractures and bruises require rest to fully heal. Many people, especially the elderly, can develop pneumonia and possibly die from a rib fracture.

Death

Rollovers cause many deaths, especially when a motorist is not buckled up. A passenger could land on their neck and break it or be tossed from the car and be fatally wounded that way. Although only a small percentage of car accidents are rollovers, an outsized percentage of car accident deaths stem from this type of accident. Wearing a seatbelt is the best way to prevent death.
